THE Singapore Foreign Minister, Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, was on a working visit to Buenos Aires from 22 to 23 May 2018 for a series of bilateral meetings with Argentine leaders. He earlier attended the G20 Foreign Ministers Meeting  on 21 May 2018. Singapore has been invited to participate in the G20 process as the ASEAN Chair this year. Singapore is also the representative of the Global Governance Group (3G), an informal grouping of 30 small and medium sized countries, which seeks to promote cooperation between G20 and non-G20 countries.

In Argentina he had met President Mauricio Macri and had separate bilateral meetings with Minister of Foreign Affairs and Worship Jorge Faurie; Minister of Science, Technology and Productive Innovation Lino Barañao; and Senator of the Province of Buenos Aires Esteban José Bullrich. Minister Balakrishnan had also hosted dinner for Minister of Treasury Nicolás Dujovne, Minister of Finance Luis Andrés Caputo, and Minister of Modernisation Andrés Horacio Ibarra.

In his meeting with President Macri they both reiterated their commitment to conclude negotiations on a Bilateral Investment Treaty (BIT) before the end of 2018 as well as begin talks on an Avoidance of Double Taxation Agreement as soon as possible.

In his meeting with his counterpart Jorge Faurie, he welcomed Minister Faurie’s visit to Singapore in August 2018 to sign the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia during the 51st ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting.
